New composition to be debuted this Sunday at Scalesceugh Hall
Eden Baroque return to Scalesceugh Hall on Sunday (August 18) with a programme including a new piece written especially for them by Carlisle-based composer Dr Tamsin Jones (pictured, right). Michael Sanderson (baritone and baroque violin) and Katharine May (harpsichord) are Eden Baroque and will be performing popular songs and instrumental music from the 17th and 18th centuries. The new piece is a setting of a John Donne poem, The Good Morrow. Katharine explains: “It is a very calm, gentle piece, written in the New Baroque style but with some 21st century harmonic twists. “Its very beautiful, and is written for baritone, baroque violin and harpsichord, so uses all our forces. “Tamsin is an up-and-coming composer who has already achieved a considerable amount, especially on the choral music scene. “She was commissioned to compose a carol for choir and organ for the Keswick Choral Society, and her latest commission is a choral and orchestral piece for Cumbria Rural Choirs, to be premiered in 2020.” Tamsin’s music has been recorded, performed internationally and broadcast on television and radio. The rest of Eden Baroque’s Scalesceugh Hall programme will include Purcell, Lawes, Couperin and Handel, played on period instruments. The concert starts at 3pm, but the lawns of Scalesceugh Hall & Villas will be open to anyone who wants to bring a picnic from 1pm. Tickets £12 in advance only, including interval strawberries and cream, and a glass of wine or juice. Seating is limited to 60.
